Koan-kong in Holo-Taiwanese or Kuan-yu in Mandarin is a well-known historical character. He is worshipped for brevity, strength, loyalty, friendship, and justice. There are plenty of temple holding him as the primary god.
His legendary story of going through the first arm-surgery in China before the anesthesia was available was well cited among all. He was known to overcome the pain by concentrating on playing a chess game at the time of surgery
Watching the red-faced Koan-kong gives some people the peace of mind thinking they will be well taken care of by this hero.
The popularity of Koan-kong is also an indicator that the Chinese and Taiwanese are generally not satisfied with the ruling real people. Just like all the other places in the world the people in Taiwan continue to look upon the legendary hero to deliver the world.
Flying such kite might have the effect of being reminded of an acknowledged role model if the stories were also known.
