In Holo-Taiwanese, the word lion has the same pronunciation as the
word “west”.
Also, dancing lion is a Chinese expression while teasing lion is the expression of Holo-Taiwanese for the same activity. Teasing lion sound exactly same as teasing the west.
Interestingly, nobody carries the concept of teasing the west in conversation at all. There has never been confusion over the pronunciation.
This is not any ordinary lion. The dancing lions are designed and produced by people most likely have never seen the real ones. In the traditional Oriental farming societies lion-dancing is one of the grass-root athletic activities. Does the lion scare away bad guys or devils? Who knows? The associated drum beats and the physical exercises can practical strength the capability and elevate the morale and courage.
Flying a face of a dancing lion can be an economic way to achieve some of the effects of lion dancing, not all. It is an easy way to have fun without the heart-pressing drumming noise.
Watch the big eyes and how the face tilts in the air. You will believe that lions can be cute and fun.
